WEF Innovative Technology Award

The Headworks X-Tractor™: Fulfilling a Market Need

HOUSTON, Texas - October 1, 2007 - Houston-based Headworks Inc., the leading supplier of wastewater screening systems, was selected as recipient of this year's WEF Innovative Technology award for the X-Tractor. This equipment provides our customers with the next generation in screenings washing and compacting with superior performance. At Headworks we constantly strive to offer the leading edge in the industry by integrating innovation and proven methods from around the world. To have this acknowledged with this prestigious award is a real honor. The award was presented at the WEFTEC Exhibitors and Advertisers Appreciation Reception.

Since the early 1980's the trend in municipal wastewater treatment has been to screen with finer and finer screen openings. This movement has been driven by technological advances in biological processes, the evolution of screening handling and washing equipment and ever tightening regulations.

Coarse screens removed only trash and large debris. This type of material did not retain water nor would it compact effectively. Fine screens remove cellulose, paper, plastics, small debris and organics. Paper and rags retain water. With a little squeeze that free water can be removed reducing weight and volume. To perform this function screenings compactors emerged. As the screen openings continued to get smaller, organics became a larger component of the screenings mixture and many landfills began to restrict what was acceptable. Compactors became virtually a requirement rather than a nicety. Washing was needed and added.

The X-Tractor Washer/Compactor was designed to handle the larger water volumes discharged from screens using spray headers for cleaning the screen and is often followed by a sluice trough. It takes advantage of the excess water to wash the screenings and reduce organics during transport, without adding equipment or process steps, and discharges clean dry screenings with no visible organics.

The X-Tractor washer/compactor unit is a shaftless washer compactor that was developed for applications where higher water volumes are seen. The discharge from fine perforated screens that use water to release the solids or sluiced solids or even pumped slurries can be fed into the large inlet hopper of the X-Tractor. As the shaftless spiral conveys the solids toward the dewatering zone, water sprays are used to rinse remaining organics for the material. Near the motor the solids are compacted and are forced to make a 90 degree turn into the discharge tube. The discharge tube provides additional back pressure increasing dryness. To prevent plugging the discharge tube increases in diameter over its length. The discharge tube is custom designed to fit site requirements providing flexibility in orientation as the discharge tube can include small bends.
