MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Michele M. LaNoue, Headworks President and CEO

Happy May Day HeadsUp Readers!

Here in Texas it’s a glorious Springtime. As the weather renews us, thoughts of vacations and travel begin to dominate our conversations. With rising fuel costs affecting our auto budgets and airplane ticket prices, perhaps we should all be taking closer looks at where trains can take us this summer.

Yep, you guessed it. The theme of HeadsUp this month is trains, railways, and the historical impact they’ve had on our lives. We’ve included a case study on the Norfolk Southern Corporation’s focus on the environment and how they utilized a Headworks Bar Screen as part of their Norfolk CTE Screenings System to treat runoff from the trains and train yard, including dealing with the unusual amount of bottle caps they had to deal with.

Take a look at my first summer reading suggestions, The Rothschilds and The Forever Street, both by Frederic Morton. The Rothschilds is a fascinating look at one family’s impact on the lives of generations including the history of how and why the Rothschilds brought railways to Continental Europe starting in Austria, connecting salt and coal deliveries to the City of Vienna. Additionally, we’ve included a piece on the connecting moment of one of the greatest engineering feats in our country’s history, the completion of the Union and Central Pacific Railway.

Finally, we have an interesting article on our very own Carrie Cash’s ride for the MS150 last month. Carrie finished ahead of much of the pack in this ride that raised over $14 Million for research on Multiple Sclerosis. Learn more about why Carrie is so passionate about this fund racer by following the link below.

Until next month, Team Headworks wishes you all the joys of May!

Best Regards,
Michele LaNoue
CEO

Case Study – Headworks Bar Screen Takes on Railway Yard's Bottle Cap Challenge
Bar Screen Installation at Norfolk Southern CorporationNorfolk Southern Corporation keeps a clear focus on improving the environment, including screening the debris from the stormwater runoff at the locomotive service yard prior to treatment. To learn about how they did it, click here.
The Joining of a Nation with a Golden Spike
Golden Spike CeremonyThe ceremonious Golden Spike connecting the two completed railway lines was driven in at a crowded ceremony by the Honorable Leland Stanford. In perhaps the world's first live virtual mass-media event, the hammers blows were wired over the telegraph line so that each hammer stroke would be heard as a click at telegraph stations nationwide. Click here to read about this historic event.
The Rothschilds and Frederic Morton's Vienna
Frederic Morton's The RothschildsMorton's histories and novels have taught me a great deal about the history and culture of Vienna and of the impact the conflicting rulers and people of the region had on the world today. Morton focuses on small periods of time in history to illuminate the details of the pivotal events that brought the world to where we are today. Have a look at two books of his that make for great summer reading!
