MS150 Raises Over $14 Million with Assist from Headworks Employee!

Stephanie Miller at the MS150

Carrie Cash, Headworks’ Marketing Director, rode her fifth MS150 on April 12th and 13th! The MS150 is a 180-mile weekend bicycle ride from Houston to Austin, Texas. It’s the largest event of its kind in the country, and the 13,000+ riders, volunteers and corporations involved help raise over $14 million to help research, treat, and eventually find a cure for people living with Multiple Sclerosis. Riders generally ride for a “pedal partner,” a family member or friend that they know who has MS.

MS is a tragic disease that attacks the central nervous system, often striking young adults in their prime of life. For Carrie, this year was especially important because Carol, the pedal partner she rides for every year, died from MS the month before the event after a ten-year battle with the disease.

The country highway route was a solid colorful stream of cyclists, riding along fields of Texas wildflowers and farmland. It is a truly Texas-sized peloton of diversity made up of all sizes, ages, and cultures. The youngest tykes are seen pedaling on the back of tandems. This year the oldest rider was a 93 year-old man. Even the Mayor of Houston, Bill White, pedaled along for this great cause. The ride this year was especially challenging. Cyclists usually count on a prevailing tailwind from Houston to Austin, but a 25 mph headwind made for a tough experience. The extremely windy conditions took a huge physical toll on most riders.

After the first 100 miles, riders camp overnight in the town of LaGrange where it takes thousands of sponsors and volunteers to pull off a virtual city of cyclists. Over 9,000 hot pancakes are served Sunday morning to the riders before their trek to Austin. The journey ends at the steps of the Texas State Capital, a welcome site for weary cyclists, who are met by a cheering crowd of family, fans, and people waving MS signs reading "Thank You". It is a wonderful, emotional, rewarding finish.

Golden Spike CeremonyThe ceremonious Golden Spike connecting the two completed railway lines was driven in at a crowded ceremony by the Honorable Leland Stanford. The Rothschilds and Frederic Morton's Vienna
Frederic Morton's The RothschildsMorton's histories and novels have taught me a great deal about the history and culture of Vienna and of the impact the conflicting rulers and people of the region had on the world today. Morton focuses on small periods of time in history to illuminate the details of the pivotal events that brought the world to where we are today. Have a look at two books of his that make for great summer reading!
