MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Michele M. LaNoue, Headworks President and CEO

Welcome to the November Issue of HeadsUp!

Things have been exciting here in our industry this last month. We attended WEFTEC 2009 in Orlando Florida. Happily, it was well attended by many professionals interested in stimulating the economy by improving, expanding or building new water reuse facilities for their communities. During the show, Senior Vice President Gerald Seidl, one of the founders of Headworks, and Steve Smith, our Technical Director/Biological Systems - Houston, were interviewed by WaterWorld for the publisher’s October Newsletter. The guys did a great job explaining our business in just five minutes. Be sure to check the link out to the right!

GOLD! That’s the focus of our case study this month. As mentioned in previous newsletters, Headworks acquired the business of Hydroxyl Systems Inc. this summer. One of the many successful installations of their Moving Bed Bio Reactor (“MBBR”) biological process was in a goldmine in Canada. Read how Hydroxyl’s team went in and worked with the client to find a successful solution to their challenges for thiocyanate removal from the mine’s wastewaters. And why the client continues to expand its use even today of the ACTIVECELL® technology!

With the addition of our Canada office this year, we’re learning new cultures, eh. Thanksgiving is in fact celebrated in Canada, just in the early part of October rather than the last Thursday of November as in the USA. So why? How did it all start? Why do we celebrate it on different days? Well, for the answers, check out our article by a good friend of mine in London who viewed the States’ holiday from afar and John Leask, our engineer cum author in Canada, who gives us the local take!

The Royal Caribbean’s Ocean of the Seas set sail last week. We’ll be highlighting it’s maiden voyage early next year. In the meantime, we’re providing a link to one of the websites with information on the ship, including its cutting edge wastewater treatment system provided by Headworks Bio!

Have a wonderful November, a great Thanksgiving if you’re celebrating this month and check in next month to see how we finish off the year! And check out our website for fun photos of this year’s Halloween costume contest!

Thanks for being our readers!

Michele LaNoue
CEO

Oasis of the SeasRoyal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, the largest cruise ship ever built and an engineering marvel, sets off from its Finnish birth place to its home in Florida.
Built by STX Europe and 40% larger than the largest ship previously built, the shipbuilder said that environmental considerations played an important part in planning the vessel. It dumps no sewage into the sea, reuses its wastewater and consumes 25% less power than similar, but smaller, cruise liners. Headworks Bio’s team provided the news making final design, installation and commissioning of its wastewater treatment plant. Click here.
