A brief, general description of IFAS and MBBR processes reviews the fundamental aspects of the systems. The presentation describes circumstances in which IFAS and/or MBBR are feasible options to consider. Case studies were used to illustrate comparisons of IFAS and MBBR technologies to other options. IFAS and MBBR design considerations are described.
Speakers, Black & Veatch:
- Mark Steichen, Director of Wastewater Process
- Heather Phillips, Process Engineer

The webcast covers a wide range of process and practical design considerations for IFAS and MBBR based on experience gained from the “first generation” implementation of these technologies in North America. An introduction provides a general overview of the technologies, a discussion of the drivers for the selection of these technologies, and a few full scale examples of how they have been successfully applied to address a number of wastewater treatment needs.
The discussion of process design considerations include: pilot and bench scale testing, model calibration parameters, and optimization of the reactor configuration based on the evaluation of full scale operational data. Practical design considerations include: a discussion of evaluation factors, process configurations, screening requirements, aeration system design, media retention sieves, approach velocities, foam and scum removal, and maintenance provisions.
Speakers, CH2M Hill:
- Glen T. Daigger, Chief Wastewater Process Engineer
- Joshua P. Boltz, Senior Wastewater Engineer
- James P. McQuarrie (Metro Water
Reclamation District, Denver, CO)

The moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) and integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) processes can operate as a two (anoxic) or three (aerobic) phase systems with buoyant free-moving plastic biofilm carriers. Selectively, these systems can be used for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment, aquaculture, potable water denitrification, and in roughing, secondary, tertiary, and sidestream applications. This webcast summarizes state-of-the art MBBR and IFAS design procedures.
